The Conservation Intern is a full-time non-exempt position. The goal of this project is to prepare a report and associated materials related to the continued role of POST in defining and developing a thriving, sustainable conservation landscape in our region with particular attention paid to social justice and climate change issues. 

Reporting to the Director of Conservation Science, and with direction from team members, the intern will critically read regional planning documents produced by our external cohort and update summaries that consistently capture the key elements according to the region affected and the various conservation values involved (water, access, wildlife, habitat protection, and climate change, etc.).


  • The project will first review and synthesize existing regional plans to identify a shared vision for the conservation landscape that we, along with our external partners, are working toward.
  • Next the project will conduct case studies of organizations across the country highlighting the innovative conservation approaches.
  • The intern will also write a limited number of case studies, these studies will focus on organizations outside of POST working region that are innovating especially relating to the intersections of conservation, social justice, and climate change.
  • Finally, the intern will assist in the drafting of a vision informed by the regional planning documents and case studies, as well as initial concepts of the role that POST is uniquely positioned to play in working with regional partners to achieve the vision.


  • A strong passion for POST’s mission
  • Have a background, experience, interest, or coursework in land conservation or environmental science
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization and project management abilities
  • Ability to work independently and within a team and communicate clearly and often with extended project teams
  • Capacity to perform well in a deadline driven, dynamic environment
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly, digest complex material, and produce cogent, useful, and thematically consistent summaries.
  • Very strong verbal, critical reading, and report writing skills are essential.
  • Creative thinking for identifying common connections between disparate ideas.
  • Be highly organized and detail oriented
  • Be motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Bachelor’s degree or working towards graduate degree preferred
  • Valid California driver’s license 


  • Employee is required to speak and hear.
  • Employee is required to hike over rough terrain.
  • Employee is required to lift 15 lbs.
  • Employee must be able to drive.

This is a temporary position and carries no discretionary benefits. Exact timing and scheduling can be flexible to accommodate the appropriate candidate. Pay is $22.00 per hour. POST’s office is located in downtown Palo Alto, conveniently located near public transportation.
