ABOUT RAN

For more than 30 years, Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has campaigned to preserve forests, protect the climate and uphold human rights by challenging corporate power and systemic injustice through research, education, partnerships, peaceful direct action, grassroots organizing, strategic campaigns and communications. We are committed to working with Indigenous and frontline communities directly impacted by profit-driven systems of injustice. In partnership with allies from around the world, RAN challenges corporations to stop their destructive operations, respect human rights, and adopt policies that reduce their contributions to climate change. With a budget of approximately $11 million and an international staff of approximately 60 (based from San Francisco to New York to London to Asia), RAN works toward a world where the rights and dignity of all communities are respected and where healthy forests, a stable climate, and wild biodiversity are protected and celebrated.

THE POSITION

RAN seeks a proven, passionate, and dynamic leader to advance its mission. The ideal candidate is a movement-oriented activist who is visionary, strategic, and able to expand upon RAN’s strong reputation and successful history of real-world impact. This is a highly influential position in both the national and international environmental and human rights communities.

The Deputy Executive Director will play a key programmatic role at RAN, directly supervising the Forest Program and the Climate and Energy Program directors, and the Digital Department and Organizing Department directors. The ideal candidate will have programmatic strategy, management, and organizational development experience. They will be committed to racial justice and will be able to act as a confident representative of RAN’s mission, values, and programs. They will be a member of the Executive Team and the Leadership Team and report to the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Deputy Executive Director will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Work in concert with the Executive Director and the Leadership Team to direct the planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of programmatic work at RAN to ensure progress toward achieving RAN’s mission.
  • Effectively communicate RAN’s values, achievements, and impact to internal and external audiences, including media, Board members, staff (US based and international), and other organizations.
  • Serve as the executive resource and oversight for the Climate Program, the Forest Program, the Digital Department, and the Organizing Department.
  • Guide the ongoing evolution and implementation of a racial justice analysis throughout RAN’s programmatic work and organizational structure.
  • Develop and maintain effective, authentic, and respectful partnerships with key programmatic allies across the globe.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with major donors and philanthropic institutions that support RAN’s work.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to sustain an organizational culture and structure that promotes highly effective work by fostering cooperation, communication, trust, equity, fairness, and inclusivity through direct feedback, transparent practices, collaborative workspaces, and choice points.
  • Support implementation of Board directives, attend Board meetings as a non-voting member, provide timely reporting of programmatic and racial justice activities to the Board, and advise the Board on strategic decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Demonstrated record indicating a passion for, and alignment with, RAN’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Successful experience in senior management of complex organizations with skills to facilitate and motivate the organization through intense multi-program, and multi-team planning processes.
  • Exceptional visionary and strategic thinking skills to chart programmatic directions that result in clear operational goals.
  • Nuanced understanding of and experience with the dynamics of working with local, frontline, and Indigenous groups and experience in developing campaigns that create alliances with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Track record of commitment to racial justice and equity and an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and identities.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience with media and public relations strategy and the ability to enthusiastically and persuasively represent RAN to external audiences.
  • Inspiring and collaborative leadership style that leads by example and fosters creativity and high-quality work from staff.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time position with an anticipated starting salary range of $175,000-195,000, commensurate with experience. RAN staff are eligible to work remotely from anywhere they are legally authorized, or to work out of RAN’s office in San Francisco. Because this is a highly collaborative leadership position that oversees multiple departments, candidates should expect to overlap the majority of their working hours with team members distributed across US time zones (primarily Eastern and Pacific), and have flexibility to accommodate engagement with international staff in the UK and Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Benefits include 100% RAN-paid health, dental and vision insurance for the staff person and their partner/family, four weeks PTO (increases to five weeks after two years) as well as a paid winter break, and a retirement plan with a 3% employer match. Additionally, after every five years of service, staff are eligible for a 12-week fully-paid sabbatical.

RACIAL JUSTICE

RAN strives to integrate values of equity and fairness into our work, which includes bringing an intentional racial justice analysis to our programmatic work and organizational structure. We are seeking candidates who have a commitment to engage in this ongoing process and work with us to create a just and inclusive work environment and world.

RAN values diversity in race, class, gender, culture, and religion, and implements programs internally to ensure that staff, board, and activists understand and adopt anti-oppression principles. For more information about RAN’s history, culture, and philosophy, please visit RAN’s website.
